A TEMPLATE FOR QUICK LETTERING OF YOUR OWN STYLE

A TEMPLATE FOR QUICK LETTERING OF YOUR OWN STYLE
When I was a student of Architecture, I find difficult to complete my drawings in the examination with good lettering. Using stencil is time consuming and require rotring pens, lettering with guide lines is still more time consuming. We were unheard of 0.5 pen pencil or clutch pencils at that time. Only few affordable students were using Made in Japan, imported pencils. Poor lettering spoils all the efforts taken for good drafting.  I was wondering how to tackle this problem. Later I found my own solution for this. It is very easy and anybody can make it. You just require a thick transparent OHP sheet, a steel scale and a cutter.

In all drawings there will be hierarchy of lettering like titles, subtitles, descriptions etc. Hence we need lettering guide lines of different height. Decide the various heights, draw then over transparent sheet and cut them. Now your hand made lettering stencil is ready. Keep it on the drawing sheet, match with any horizontal line of your drawing with the guide lines (Cuts) and write in pen, pencil, rotring pens, ball pen, gel pen etc. You can develop your own lettering style. You can carry the same for your examination and quickly complete your drawing with good lettering.

Transparent sheet is cut along guide lines of different heights.

Even big circles can be cut which is not available in circle template to show trees in plan in 1:100. 1:200 scale

This is how you can use the template for lettering

If you remove the lettering will look like this. The stiff the template, lettering will be good.

You can have your own lettering style.

This is a sample done in my college days using the template (1976) for an asignment
